The Song

The Story, The Voices, The Message.

Recorded on February 1st, 2010, in the same studio as the original 25 years earlier (Henson Recording Studios, formerly A&M Recording Studios) the new version, in which Jones and Richie serve as executive producers and producers, was created in collaboration with executive producers Wyclef Jean, Randy Phillips and Peter Tortorici; producers Humberto Gattica and RedOne; co-producers Rickey Minor, Mervyn Warren and Patti Austin; and project producers John Rubey and Adam Fell to benefit the Haitian earthquake relief efforts and the rebuilding of Haiti.

Academy Award-winning writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), whose own personal efforts as well as those of Artists for Peace and Justice have already saved countless lives in Haiti, filmed the private recording session to create the accompanying video and “behind-the-scenes” production, and serves as Film Director and as an Executive Producer with Jones, Richie, Jean, Phillips and Tortorici.

Quincy said, “25 years ago, the entertainment industry showed the power of community to help our fellow man when we recorded ‘We Are The World’ to bring relief to those suffering from famine in Ethiopia. And while the need to assistant Africa continues, today the country of Haiti is suffering immeasurably from the destruction due to the recent earthquake and is in immediate need of relief that will last long after the television cameras have left. As artists, we have joined together on this 25th anniversary and in the spirit of ‘We Are The World’ to help meet that need.”

“What an unbelievable group of people who have come together to give their voices, for a cause to start the healing of a people who have experienced a devastation of such magnitude,” said Richie. “We believe ‘We Are The World – 25 for Haiti’ can be the start of the healing process.”

“I’m thrilled Quincy, Lionel and Randy invited me to be a part of something so wonderful in which we are standing side by side with Haitian artists and community to help them rebuild their broken nation,” stated Paul Haggis.

“On January 12th, the people of Haiti were faced with a tragedy unlike anything the country has ever experienced,” said Wyclef Jean, songwriter and cofounder of the We Are The World Foundation. “Today, I am proud to be joined by so many members of the artistic community that want to support the region and have donated their time and talents to providing an effective way for the global community to get involved with helping the Haitian population.”

The 25th Anniversary recording features over 80 artists and performers. The recording of ‘We Are The World 25 For Haiti’ embodied the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and generosity as the original recording 25 years ago. Every one of the artists who participated, regardless of genre or generation, walked into the room with their hearts and souls completely open to coming together to help the people of Haiti.

This production was made possible through financial support from Visa Inc.

“We Are the World” is a song and charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and co-produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World. Honored numerous times — including three Grammy Awards, one American Music Award and a People’s Choice Award — the song was promoted with a critically received music video, a home video, a special edition magazine, a simulcast, and several books, posters and shirts. The promotion and merchandise aided the success of “We Are the World”, which was eventually named the biggest-selling single of all time.

In the years that have followed, USA for Africa has raised and distributed more than $63 million in revenue from the sales of more than 7 million units of the album, single and cassettes, plus nearly 2 million digital sales and related merchandise. Just over half the total was spent on emergency relief (food, medicine, and refugee services) and the balance was used to support more than 500 different relief, rehabilitation and development projects in 18 different countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

BRACK OBAMA: 'This is your victory'

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama spoke at a rally in Grant Park in Chicago, Illinois, after winning the race for the White House Tuesday night. The following is an exact transcript of his speech.
Obama:

Hello, Chicago.
If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.
It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference.
It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states.
We are, and always will be, the United States of America.
It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day. ...

We, Mongolians got our first Gold Medal from Olympics

This man called Tuvshinbayar Naidan started a new era for Mongolians. And he is leading to the even better success... Just met him yesterday over at my office. He was quite calm and nice guy. The Rotary Club of Ulaanbaatar is going to have an Charity Event on this Saturday (Oct 4). We met him to let him sign on kimono (judo gear) that we got and take a picture wearing it. Rotary Club is going to sell that kimono at the Charity Event to raise money for schools.

Robert Thurman, the "Dalai Lama's Man in America" Joins Candle for Tibet

Robert Thurman, whom the New York Times called "The Dalai Lama's man in America," officially supports Candle for Tibet, the biggest single action in the world for a free Tibet.

In France, Marcelle Roux, founder and President of the France-Tibet Association, joins too.

Tel Aviv, August 4 2008

Robert A. F. Thurman, close personal friend of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and father of renowned actress Uma Thurman, has officially joined the Candle for Tibet (CFT) campaign. He will speak and open CFT's public candle lighting in Union Square, NYC, on Thursday August 7th.

"The Candle for Tibet initiative is a most wonderful thing," said Thurman, president of Tibet House US, in a statement sent to Candle for Tibet. "We seem powerless to ameliorate conditions on the ground in the present crisis moment. This peaceful prayer vigil, since it focuses the minds of many millions on the different sufferings of tormented and tormentor alike, is a powerful way to intervene. And it does not preclude anything else we can think of and do further on. I hope everyone who reads this will join in this important effort."

Marcelle Roux, founder and President of the France-Tibet Association, joins CFT campaign in France. Mrs Roux is planning, if her health permits, to open the public candle lighting in Paris.

"Congratulations, my friends, for this fabulous action in favour of freedom in Tibet. Special thanks to Mr David Califa for his dedication and his creativity. Thank you to all the members of Candle4Tibet for their generous and tireless efforts." Said Marcelle Roux, who H.H. the Dalai Lama named "The Mother of the flag"

CFT recently received official support from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and Thurman and Roux's participation adds yet more prominent names to the effort. The New York Times has referred to Thurman as "The Dalai Lama's man in America" and Time magazine has named him one of the "25 Most Influential Americans."

The CFT action, named "The Greatest Light Protest on Earth," will start on Thursday, August 7th, 2008 at 9:00 p.m., when at least 100 million people all over the world will light a candle in public, with friends or at their homes. People can join the action at http://www.candle4tibet.org .

CFT organizers are expecting millions to take parts in public candle lighting events throughout the world. "We can hardly keep up with the flow of incoming events" Says David Califa, who created the campaign and is running it from Tel Aviv. "We have vigils in virtually every major city in the world. The beauty of it is that we organized none of them. It is truly a people's protest". (For a complete list of candle-lit vigils visit http://www.candle4tibet.org/en/vigils )

CFT organizers also encourage all freedom lovers in the world to drive their cars with headlights on during the entire day of Friday, August 8th, 2008, the day of the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony,in appreciation of their own freedom.

CFT is additionally calling on all people attending the opening ceremony in Beijing to light candles, lighters, flashlights and cell phones at the moment the Chinese delegation enters the Olympic stadium.

Synchronized with the beginning of the opening ceremony, teams from "Sad Smoky Mountains" will flare the skies with red smoke from skyscrapers, monuments and major buildings In major cities, and from the summits of more than 100 mountains on three continents. (For more information on Sad Smoky Mountains, visit http://www.sadsmokymountains.net/.)

"Mr. Thurman and Mrs. Roux's support of our efforts is very inspiring," said David Califa, who created the Campaign for Tibet four months ago. "It reinforces the importance of our non-violent action and the power it will have for the people of Tibet."

More about Robert A. F. Thurman from his website:

A scholar, author, former Tibetan Buddhist monk, co-founder with Richard Gere of Tibet House in New York City, a close personal friend of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, and father of five children including the actress, Uma Thurman, he is the Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University. Time magazine named him one of the "25 Most Influential Americans." He has lectured all over the world; his charisma and enthusiasm draw packed audiences.
